Do Karts Go Soft?

Posted in Reader Questions By Col Fink

A discussion on kartbook brought up the question - do kart chassis "go off" when they do a lot of work? Do they just get slower or less responsive as they get used?

This discussion on Kartbook lead to the question "why move the seat back when the track gets grippy?", so I'll have a crack at answering that question here.

The greatest difficulty about 'big meetings' is that you only ever get to test in those conditions when you're at a big meeting. There is simply no other time when the track has layers of fresh rubber being laid down (and peeled up) by so many karts. Because the conditions are so different to a normal practice day, it can be very difficult to adapt. People often complain at the end of the weekend that "we tried absolutely everything, and nothing worked!"

We've all heard the common phrases before.

"I can't get off the corner".

"I'm stuck to the track".

"I've got too much grip".

So, most people come to realise soon after joining the karting fraternity that magnesium wheels are almost a necessity to compete at the top level in many classes... especially when it's hot. But there are so many choices, it's hard for the newcomer to know what to invest in. We thought it was time to describe the pro's and con's of each wheel type to help you make the right choice for your kart.

Here's a great piece of footage from the 2011 F1 qualifying at Suzuka, and it demonstrates just how precise you need to be to defeat your rivals. Show 99% of people this footage with no commentary and they wouldn't even notice the differences. The exact line taken through each corner, and track position and attitude of the car, all of this adds up to dictate your final laptime. The tiniest of changes can mean the difference between victory and defeat, as we see here.

Tech Videos

Posted in K-Racer News By Col Fink

Hey everyone,

As many (many!) of you know, I've had a few issues with the videos on the site recently. As it happens, I'm filming a whole bunch of new videos now, so rather than muck around with these ones any more, I've just made them publicly available.

Do Something Different

Posted in Driving By Col Fink

I was at CIK round 3 at Pucka on the weekend helping my old mate Simo bang around in TAG Heavy. Simo had a weekend to forget, unfortunately, but a couple of his Harrington Doyle team-mates did something which struck a chord with me.

Hey guys,

I had a smashing new idea - see making good videos out at the track is a LOT harder than you'd think - and when it's miserably wet and cold like it is in Melbourne right now... well, it's even less likely to happen! However, I do own a whiteboard, and I do dislike Wednesdays just as much as everyone else (you're never further from raceday than you are on a Wednesday), so I thought I would try to spice up hump day occasionally by starting a new tradition...
